When a fire rang out in the early 1920s, residents of the Village of Oak Lawn relied on water buckets and wagons provided by neighboring Volunteer Fire Departments, Grandview Park and Columbus Manor. As the Village grew, so did the needs for a professional firefighting outfit. When Oak Lawn annexed Grandview Park in 1964 and Columbus Manor in 1965, the fire departments were absorbed into what we are today.

Local 3405 was recognized and Chartered by both the International Association of Fire Fighters and the Associated Fire Fighters of Illinois on October 1, 1991. We have 65 Union Fire Fighters, most of whom are also Paramedics. The town population is approximately 56,000 and is located just South of Chicago and three miles away from Midway Airport.

Due to the efforts of our local union IAFF 3405 we have been able to preserve our daily minimum staffing level at 21. Making sure enough firefighters and paramedics are available for the nearly 9,000 calls for service we respond to annually.
